Drop Studio V2: A New Mockup Engine, Free Design Placement, and Bigger Plans for Everyone

By Kerry Egeler, Founder of Drop Studio

Today is the biggest release in Drop Studio history. It has been in the works for months, most of it is invisible plumbing, and all of it exists to do one thing: put your design on a garment so convincingly that nobody asks whether the photo is real.

Here is everything that shipped today, and what it means for your account. Short version: the mockup engine was rebuilt from the ground up, design placement is now free and unlimited on every plan, and every plan got more credits at no extra cost. You do not have to do anything. It is already live in your account.

V2 mockup generation: a print engine, not a redraw

Since launch, putting a design on a mockup meant asking an AI image model to redraw the photo with your design on the shirt. When it worked, it looked great. But you have felt the problem: the design would drift a little, warp somewhere it should not, or come back slightly different from what you uploaded. So you rerolled, and paid again, and rerolled again.

V2 throws that whole approach away. Drop Studio now measures the garment in the photo once: where the fabric is, which way every part of it faces, where the folds are, what is in front of it. Then your design is printed onto the photo with pixel math. No image model ever touches your artwork.

That one change fixes the three things that matter most:

  • It is consistent. Your design lands exactly where you put it, at exactly the size you set, every single time. The model's face, the background, the garment color: nothing else in the photo changes, because nothing else is generated. Rerolling is gone because there is nothing to reroll.
  • It is realistic. The print wraps around the chest and dips into folds the way real ink on real fabric does. The garment's own light and shadow fall across your design. Fabric texture breaks up the ink the way a real screen print sits on cotton. On hoodies, the drawstrings lay back over the print, and hair or a hand in front of the shirt stays in front of your design.
  • It is free. Not cheaper. Free. Zero credits, every plan, no cap.

You are in control now

Placement is no longer a prompt and a prayer. You drag your design on the photo, pull a corner to resize it, and watch it conform live. Four sliders control how the print sits on the fabric:

  • Fabric Wrap: how far the print bends around the body and into folds
  • Grain: how much fabric texture shows through the ink
  • Opacity: ink coverage, because a real screen print is rarely a solid 100
  • Lighting: how strongly the garment's own light and shadow fall across the print

Every adjustment re-renders in about a second, and every adjustment is free. A Before/After toggle shows you the flat paste next to the finished print so you can see exactly what the engine is doing.

The first time you print on a new photo, Drop Studio spends a few seconds measuring the garment. After that, every placement, every slider change, and every re-render on that photo is instant. The measurements are saved, so coming back tomorrow is instant too.

Why free?

Because the economics genuinely changed. The old AI placement paid an image model to regenerate the whole photo on every attempt. The new engine measures a photo once, cheaply, and everything after that is math on our own servers. When placing a design stopped costing us real money per attempt, we stopped charging credits for it. Your credits now go toward the things that are still genuinely expensive to make: new designs and new mockup photos.

Every plan just got bigger, at no extra cost

We did not want anyone reading about V2 from the outside. Every account was upgraded today, automatically:

  • Free accounts now start with 10 credits, up from 6, and existing free accounts were topped up. With placement free, 10 credits is 10 designs or mockups, and unlimited prints of every one of them.
  • Starter went from 50 to 75 credits per month. Same $14.99.
  • Pro went from 125 to 150 credits per month, and upscaling is now free on Pro. Same $29.99.
  • Pro Max is now Unlimited. It went from 250 to 400 credits per month, the price came down to $49.99, and on top of free placement and free upscales, mockup generation is free on Unlimited. Generate every angle, every model, every setting you want.

If you are on a paid plan, there is nothing to click and no new price. Your next renewal simply grants the bigger amount, and the free features are already on.

What a credit buys now

The mental math is simpler than it has ever been:

  • Generating a design: 1 credit
  • Generating a blank mockup photo: 1 credit (free on Unlimited)
  • Placing a design on a mockup: free, everyone, always
  • Upscaling to print resolution: 1 credit (free on Pro and Unlimited)
  • Non-AI edits in the Editor (text, layout, background removal): free, as always

One design plus one mockup is 2 credits, and from there you can produce every placement, size, and variation of that combination without spending another credit.

The rest of the release

V2 touched almost every part of the product on its way out the door.

Back views are real now. Generate a model from behind or a back flat-lay, and print your back design on it with the same engine. Back prints stopped being a workaround.

A brand new interface. The whole app was redesigned from the ground up to be smoother and easier to use: a cleaner layout, clearer steps in the studio, a faster Library, and modals and menus that stay out of your way. Everything is where you expect it, and the flow from design to finished mockup takes fewer clicks than it did yesterday.

Folders in the Library. Your Library was a single pile. Now you can create folders, drop designs and mockups into them, select a batch and move them together, and filter the Library or any picker down to one folder. Organize by client, by collection, or by whatever keeps you sane.

Pick an aspect ratio for your mockups. Blank mockup generation now lets you choose 1:1 for product listings, 4:5 for Instagram, 9:16 for Stories and Reels, or 16:9 for banners and ads. Generate the shape you need instead of cropping after the fact.

The studio flow was rebuilt around printing. Pick a mockup from your library or upload your own photo, add a design, place it, print. The old AI placement step is gone, and the new print step is the same whether your mockup came from Drop Studio or from your own camera.

The API and MCP connector run V2 too. If you drive Drop Studio from Claude, ChatGPT, or your own scripts, the same engine is behind the /v1 endpoints. Adding a design to a mockup costs zero credits through the API, reusing a mockup_id for another design is completely free, and mockup generation supports 1:1, 4:5, and 3:4 aspect ratios. Agents can now iterate on placements without burning your balance.

How It Works got a full rewrite with annotated screenshots of the real flows, if you want the guided tour.

Watch it live

I walked through the whole release on a live stream this afternoon, building mockups with V2 in real time and answering questions. The replay is here:

Go try it

Log in, open the Mockup Studio, and print something. Your first placement will tell you more than this post can: drag the design across the chest and watch it hold its shape, follow the folds, and land exactly where you put it, for free, as many times as you want.

This is the product I wanted to build from day one. The AI placement era got us here, and I am glad to see it go.
