How Many Photos Should a Print on Demand Etsy Listing Have?

By Kerry Egeler, Founder of Drop Studio

Etsy raised its per-listing photo limit from 10 to 20 in 2025. That did not change how many photos a print on demand shirt listing actually needs, and it created a new failure mode: sellers padding out to 20 slots with near-duplicate angles of the same flat mockup, which wastes the buyer's attention instead of earning it.

The short answer

Most print on demand shirt listings need 7 to 10 photos, not all 20 available slots. The photos that earn their place are a front hero shot, a back shot if the design has back print, a close up of the print detail, a size chart, and one photo per major color option.

For most print on demand sellers, use 7 to 10 photos that each show something different, and stop once you run out of new information to give the buyer. Push toward 15 or more only when you're selling a design in many colors and each color genuinely needs its own shot to sell.

Etsy's photo rules, in one table

Rule Current spec
Max photos per listing 20 (raised from 10 in 2025)
Recommended resolution 2000 x 2000 px minimum
Best resolution for zoom 3000 x 3000 px
First photo (thumbnail) minimum 635 x 635 px
Accepted file types JPG, PNG, GIF, SVG, HEIC
Transparent PNG support Not supported, displays as black
Recommended aspect ratio Square (1:1) or 4:5

Etsy's own help documentation is explicit on the transparent PNG point, and it's the one that trips up print on demand sellers most often: a mockup exported with a transparent background to make layering easier in a design tool will show up with a black background once it's live on Etsy. Flatten it before you upload.

How many photos does Etsy actually allow now?

Etsy allows up to 20 photos per listing as of 2025, up from a long standing limit of 10. The increase rolled out gradually and wasn't heavily announced, so plenty of sellers are still working from the old assumption that 10 is the ceiling.

Having 20 slots available doesn't mean you should fill them. Etsy's guidance and most seller data point the same direction: listings with fewer than 5 photos underperform, but the return on each additional photo drops off fast after the first 8 to 10, especially on a single shirt design where the ninth photo is often just a different crop of the same front mockup.

Does using more photos help Etsy SEO or ranking?

Photo count by itself is not a documented ranking factor in Etsy search. What actually moves ranking is buyer behavior: click through rate from search, favorites, add to carts, and completed purchases. Photos influence ranking indirectly, by giving an uncertain buyer the information that turns a browse into a favorite or a sale.

That means a listing with 8 photos that clearly answer "what does this look like, what size is it, what color options exist" will usually outperform a listing with 18 photos that never quite show the print up close. Chase clarity, not the slot count.

What photos does a print on demand shirt listing actually need?

Here's the shot list, roughly in the order a buyer wants the information:

  1. Front hero mockup. The design on the shirt, centered, in your best selling or most true to life color. This is your thumbnail, so it needs to read clearly even at a small size.
  2. Back mockup. Only if there's a back print. If the back is blank, skip this slot rather than padding it with a plain-shirt photo that tells the buyer nothing.
  3. Close up of the print. A cropped, zoomed shot of the design detail. This is where fine linework, text legibility, and print quality actually get evaluated, and it's the shot most listings skip.
  4. Size chart. A garment measurement chart, not just a list of letter sizes. Buyers who don't see one ask "what does a large actually measure" in the questions tab, which costs you a reply and sometimes the sale.
  5. Color or variant grid. One photo showing every color option side by side, useful even if you also give best sellers their own dedicated shot.
  6. Lifestyle or context shot. The shirt being worn, or styled in a way that shows scale and drape. Not mandatory, but it answers "how does this actually look on a body" in a way a flat mockup can't.
  7. Fabric or fit note, if relevant. A shot or graphic calling out something like "runs true to size" or "unisex fit" when your specific blank has a fit quirk worth flagging.

That's 5 to 7 photos for a single color design, more if you're showing multiple colorways individually. It rarely needs to reach 15 unless the color count is doing the multiplying.

Do I need a lifestyle photo, or is a flat mockup enough?

A flat or ghost mockup showing the print clearly is the minimum requirement. A lifestyle photo that shows the shirt worn or styled is not mandatory, but it measurably helps buyers who are trying to judge fit, drape, and scale, which a flat mockup can't fully convey. We wrote a longer comparison of mockups versus real product photos if you want the tradeoffs in more detail. The short version: most sellers get further running both a clean flat mockup and at least one lifestyle style shot than picking only one.

Should I use a photo for every color variant?

If you offer three or four colors, yes, give each one its own photo. Color is frequently the deciding factor once a buyer already likes the design, and a buyer considering black won't reliably picture how the same design looks on maroon from a text description alone.

If you offer ten or more colors, showing every one as its own full photo eats slots that would be better spent on the print detail shot or the size chart. At that point, use one grid or swatch photo showing all colors together, plus individual shots for your two or three best sellers.

What image size and format should I upload?

Upload at 2000 by 2000 pixels minimum, and go up to 3000 by 3000 pixels if you want buyers to get a sharp result when they pinch to zoom, which is common behavior on a purchase a buyer can't touch before buying. A square 1:1 crop is the safest choice since it displays cleanly in both the search grid and the listing page zoom.

Export as a flat JPG or PNG with a solid background, never a transparent PNG, since Etsy renders transparency as black rather than showing the page background through it. Keep individual files well under Etsy's 10MB cap, ideally near 1MB each, so uploads don't stall on a slow connection.

Building the shot list without reshooting for every color

The part that makes this expensive for print on demand sellers specifically is that you're often repeating this shot list across every color and every design you list, and a physical photoshoot for each combination doesn't scale. This is the one place we'll mention what we build: Drop Studio generates the front, back, close up, and lifestyle angles on the exact blank and color you sell, from one uploaded design, so building out a full shot list across several colorways doesn't mean rebooking a shoot each time. Whatever tool you use, the shot list above is the target regardless of how the photos get made.

Quick checklist before you publish

  • Front hero mockup as photo one, clear even at thumbnail size
  • Back mockup only if there's a back print worth showing
  • One close up crop of the print detail
  • A garment measurement size chart, not just letter sizes
  • A color grid if you sell more than a couple colors, plus individual shots for best sellers
  • At least one lifestyle or worn shot if you have one available
  • Every file flattened to a solid background, no transparent PNGs
  • Photos at 2000 x 2000 px minimum, square crop, under roughly 1MB each

Seven or eight photos that hit every item on that list will outperform eighteen that don't.
